Luis Morales-Montanez and Jessica Acosta were convicted of selling $20,000 worth of methamphetamine before Chief District Judge Karen Caldwell in Lexington in 2017, and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

But a three-panel appeals court on Wednesday unanimously vacated their sentences and granted them a new trial, a report in the Courier-Journal said.

Kentucky police arrested the couple after searching their home and finding large quantities of marijuana and cocaine, digital scales, $45,507 in cash and a shrine to Jesús Malverde.

Morales-Montanez and Acosta call the Sinaloa-born bandit Malverde as their patron saint. Malverde, though not officially canonized, is admired in parts of Mexico and the United States – particularly among the poor and drug traffickers.

Lawyers prayed to a 6-inch statuette of the narco saint for help during the high-profile trial of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the former head of the Sinoloa Cartel.
