The nation was bracing for a surge of deaths in coronavirus "hotspots" Sunday while 1,000 medical military personnel were bound for New York.
In Italy, Pope Francis celebrated Palm Sunday Mass in an empty St. Peter’s Basilica and, in England, Queen Elizabeth II was poised to address her nation – from isolation.
Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, said Saturday that multiple virus hot spots may see peak fatalities in the next week. The coming weeks will be a “very, very deadly period, unfortunately,” President Donald Trump said.
Birx joined other health experts in imploring the public to continue practicing recommended social distancing measures as hotspots such as New York City, New Orleans and Detroit continued to see numbers of confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19 rise.
There were more than 300,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. as of early Sunday, according to the Johns Hopkins University data dashboard, while the nation's death toll stood at over 8,500. Worldwide, the death toll had surpassed 65,000, with more than 1.2 million people infected.
