The culprit in a nearly 30-year-old Maryland murder case was finally identified this week thanks to DNA submitted to a genealogy website.

Hans Huitz, 51, was killed by police this week after Montgomery County detectives were finally able to charge him with first-degree murder and robbery in the March 22, 1992 theft and fatal stabbing of 57-year-old James Essel, The Virginian-Pilot reported Saturday.

Essel was stabbed 29 times on the fateful night 28 years ago, when he was working alone at the Sugarloaf Mountain Market that he owned in Comus, about 50 miles west of Baltimore.

Investigators believed that blood collected at the scene was from the killer, who they thought was injured in the attack.

Though the sample enabled the creation of a DNA profile, there was no real progress in the case until 2017, thanks to DNA phenotyping developed by Virginia’s Parabon NanoLabs, which predicts a person’s ancestry and physical appearance based solely on their sample of DNA.
