A 73-year-old Colorado woman with dementia had her arm broken by a cop after she failed to steal $14 worth of items from a Walmart, according to a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday.

Karen Garner was walking home in Loveland on June 26, 2020, when the officer, Austin Hopp, broke her arm, dislocated her shoulder and sprained her wrist, the lawsuit said. Garner is 5 feet tall and weighs 80 pounds, according to the suit, which seeks unspecified damages.

Garner had walked out of a Walmart in the city, about 45 miles north of Denver, with items valued at $13.88, the suit said. Walmart employees stopped her, and she returned the items.

Walmart said it only called the cops after Garner pulled down an employee’s facemask and left the store, local Fox affiliate KDVR reported. She did not take any items with her that time.

Officer Hopp caught up with Garner as she was walking home, as captured on body-camera video released by Garner’s attorneys. (A shortened version also shows a brief confrontation outside the Walmart).
