Washington Free Beacon founding editor Matthew Continetti said Wednesday that President Donald Trump risks hindering Republican turnout in the Georgia Senate runoffs with his claims of widespread voter fraud.
"There is a real risk here that as he continues to challenge the election, he will also delegitimize the electoral process in the eyes of many Republican voters," Continetti said on Fox News's Special Report. "And that is possibly handing the Senate to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris."
Continetti said that Trump is walking a "political tightrope" by claiming the election was stolen while also trying to support Republican candidates in Georgia. Trump is traveling to Georgia Saturday to hold a rally for Republican senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue.
In a 46-minute speech released on the president's social media platforms, Trump laid out his claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election. Continetti pointed out that releasing the speech through social media outlets allowed Trump to speak directly to his most loyal supporters instead of relying on news networks.
Congress is set to officially certify the results of the election on Jan. 6, one day after the Georgia runoffs that will determine whether Republicans keep control of the Senate.
