Two tourists from China were found dead Friday near the site of a 1973 U.S. Navy plane crash in Iceland, police said.

A man, born in 1999, and a woman, born in 1997, were found on Sólheimasand, according to a statement from Iceland Police on Friday.

Police first received a report at 11:55 a.m. that a woman’s body had been found near a footpath leading to the airplane crash site, which is a popular tourist destination. Officials launched an investigation and a rescue squad, and around 2:00 p.m., found a man’s body.

A car, which is believed to have been rented by the couple, was found in a parking lot nearby. Police said the car traveled through the town of Hvolsvöllur — which is approximately 35 miles northwest of the crash site — on Jan. 13.

Initial investigations lead police to believe the man and woman were a couple traveling together. Their cause of death was not immediately clear.
