A California woman authorities believe was behind the wheel of a stolen SUV when it slammed into a 7-year-old boy on a bicycle has been arrested.
Kristalinna Pacheco was taken into custody on Monday and is facing charges including homicide, possession of a stolen vehicle and felony hit-and-run in connection with the deadly incident.
Authorities in Milpitas on Monday spotted a 2015 White Lexus R35, which had been linked to an armed robbery at the Shoe Palace earlier in the day, The Mercury News reported. The vehicle had also previously been reported stolen in San Jose on Jan. 2.
While the officers did not initiate a traffic stop, the driver seemingly spotted police cruisers nearby and attempted to flee. Milpitas Police Lt. Tyler Jamison in a press release said the vehicle “drove away at a high rate of speed. The officers did not attempt to stop the vehicle or pursue it.”
A short time later, the SUV struck a 7-year-old boy on his bike at the intersection of Park Victoria and Kennedy drives. He was rushed to the hospital, but later died from his injuries.
