It’s official – power lines owned by PG&E sparked the monster Camp Fire that killed 85 people last year and nearly wiped the town of Paradise off the map, authorities said Wednesday.

In a statement, CAL FIRE said a perfect storm of faulty equipment and red flag conditions caused the fire to explode out of control the morning of Nov. 8 and become the deadliest and most destructive in state history.

“After a very meticulous and thorough investigation, CAL FIRE has determined that the Camp Fire was caused by electrical transmission lines owned and operated by Pacific Gas and Electricity (PG&E) located in the Pulga area,” the state’s top fire authority said in a statement.

“The fire started in the early morning hours near the community of Pulga in Butte County. The tinder dry vegetation and Red Flag conditions consisting of strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures promoted this fire and caused extreme rates of spread, rapidly burning into Pulga to the east and west into Concow, Paradise, Magalia and the outskirts of east Chico,” the statement said.

The agency said it also identified a second fire that started between Pulga and Concow when electrical lines owned and operated by PG&E ignited vegetation.
