The 61-year-old talk show host took to social media to voice her displeasure at Botswana’s leader Mokgweetsi Masisi.

“President Masisi, for every person who wants to kill elephants, there are millions who want them protected," tweeted DeGeneres regarding the decision on Wednesday. "We’re watching.”

Several prominent wildlife protection groups also slammed Masisi, who rules the southern African nation of about 2.3 million residents. Botswana is home to about 130,000 elephants — the most of any country.

“Coexistence between wild animals and communities is the only way that wildlife populations will survive,” said Human Society CEO Kitty Block. “What a shame that Botswana, previously hailed as a shining example of wildlife conservation and a safe haven for elephants, has opted to become a promoter of trophy hunting.”

The ban lift raised concerns that it could trigger an increase in illegal poaching of tusks to satisfy the ivory trade, reported The Associated Press.
