Civil servants still working from home were told to 'get off their Pelotons and back to their desks' today as senior ministers including Boris Johnson attempted to entice them back to commuting.

Tory chairman Oliver Dowden accused public sector workers of preferring to use the posh home exercise equipment to returning to Whitehall at a Conservative Party Conference event.

It came after one of Whitehall’s most senior mandarins was accused of undermining ministers’ attempts to get civil servants back into the office because she wanted more time to spend on her upmarket machine.

At a tech conference last month, Sarah Healey, permanent secretary at the Department for Digital, Culture Media and Sport (DCMS), spoke about how she could put in extra miles on her Peloton bike while working from home, saying: 'That has been a huge benefit to my well-being, the lack of travelling time eating into my day.’

Mr Dowden's comments came as Boris Johnson today warned Britons working from home that they risk being 'gossiped about' and missing out on 'stimulus and competition' unless they return to the office.
