In his attempt to become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson has broken the record for the most money raised by a politician in the U.K.
The haul was largely buoyed by Brexit supporters who are supportive of the 55-year-old Johnson’s “do or die” stance on the matter. He has vowed to leave the European Union with or without a deal by the Oct. 31 deadline.
Reuters reports that Johnson, a figure who has been compared to President Trump, has raked in 702,000 pounds in the last year, beating the previous record held by former foreign minister David Miliband, who brought in 627,000 pounds in his 2010 effort to lead the Labour Party.
Johnson’s two biggest donors are Anthony Bamford, the billionaire chairman of a construction equipment company, and Jonathan Moynihan, chairman of venture capital fund Ipex Capital. Moynihan alone donated 100,000 pounds to Johnson in the last two weeks.
Both men are ardent supporters of the Brexit movement, which culminated in a June 2016 national referendum to leave the EU.
