Startling messages involving two pilots apparently show jet manufacturer Boeing was aware of problems with an automated system as far back as 2016.

The pilots discuss the 737 Max aircraft, which twice was involved in horrific crashes that, combined, killed more than 300 people.

A document obtained by ABC News identifies Boeing’s chief technical pilot Mark Forkner conversing with a colleague about the plane’s maneuvering characteristic augmentation system that he stated was “running rampant in the sim on me.”

Improper MCAS systems have been eyed as the cause of Lion Air Flight 610′s crash in Indonesia, which claimed 189 passengers and crew members in October 2018, and the Flight 302 Ethiopian Airlines tragedy from March 2019 that killed 157 more.

The FAA obtained the messages Friday in a Boeing document. Agency administrator Steve Dickson dispatched a letter to Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg demanding an explanation.
