Tyler Perry made some new black history on Oct., 5, 2019 — he officially opened his flagship studio, a 330-acre production complex recognized as the first solely owned and operated by an African-American.

The fact that Perry, whose journey includes surviving physical and sexual abuse as a child and later becoming homeless, rose to prominence on a modern-day “Chitlin’ Circuit” cross-dressing as Mabel Earlene Simmons — also known as Madea, the pistol-packing, tough-talking grandmother — adds to his remarkable achievement of becoming the chief of a billion-dollar-grossing studio in just 15 years.

Even before the studio’s star-studded opening celebration, parts of the blockbuster “Black Panther” movie, the hit AMC series “The Walking Dead,” the upcoming “Coming to America” sequel and Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s box-office-shattering “Bad Boys” sequel were all filmed at the huge facility, which was built on the site of the U.S. Army’s Fort McPherson military base in Atlanta. During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers were housed on the land. Perry purchased Fort McPherson in 2015.

“I think what makes Tyler Perry Studios special is the story,” Michelle Sneed, the studio’s president of production and development, told the Daily News.

Sneed is the head sister in charge — and the only black woman running a major studio of this magnitude.
