The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the child’s death following the incident on Saturday. Emergency personnel were called to an AutoZone parking lot after the child was found unresponsive at around 4:45 p.m., according to police.

"This is still considered a death investigation at this time," police said in a press release. "If it is ruled a homicide a formal brief will follow."

The Marion County Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy on Monday to determine the exact cause of death.

The temperatures in Indiana’s capital reached 87 degrees Saturday, the hottest day of the year so far, according to The Weather Channel.

An average of 37 children die each year in hot cars, according to the safety organization Kids and Cars.
