A powerful blast at a Houston manufacturing facility Friday morning damaged several nearby homes and sent at least one person to the hospital, authorities said.
The explosion at Watson Grinding and Manufacturing happened just after 4 a.m. and sent a fireball into the air, according to a video shared on social media.
Fire officials said at least one person was injured and another was still unaccounted for hours after the incident.
The blast was felt miles away and sent debris as far as half a mile away, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo wrote on Twitter. He also urged drivers and pedestrians to avoid the entire area out of an abundance of caution.
Two nearby schools were closed Friday and students in several others were told to remain indoors “due to air quality concerns,” Houston’s Office of Emergency Management said in a tweet.
