The Vegas Strip has been totally shut down by the coronavirus pandemic, which has closed nearly every business in the tourist-heavy city. But there are still plenty of people in Las Vegas who need shelter and, so far, efforts to help them out have been woefully inadequate.

Plenty of available beds exist for the homeless, given that all of Nevada’s hotel-casinos are currently empty. But in response to a shelter closing down because a man tested positive for coronavirus, the city’s initial solution for the 500 people left with nowhere to go was a “temporary outdoor homeless shelter.”

The movement to take the vast quantities of unoccupied hotel rooms and put them to more efficient use has been slow to take hold during the pandemic, but cities like San Francisco have at least been taking tiny steps to help make it happen. SF District 6 supervisor Matt Haney outlined to KTVU why housing the homeless is an action that can benefit everybody.
