A 10-foot alligator attacked a hunter at a wildlife reserve in Florida on Saturday, causing a "substantial injury" to the 46-year-old man's leg.

The man, identified by TV station WPEC as James Bryce, was airlifted to a hospital in Palm Beach County, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Bryce was hunting for hog with his wife when he was attacked, according to WPEC. He is expected to survive.

“Serious injuries caused by alligators are rare in Florida,” an FWC spokesperson said in a statement to the TV station. “Alligators are a conservation success story ... They help keep aquatic animal populations in balance and keep water holes open for other fish and wildlife.”

Trapper Mike Kimmel told WPEC that it is possible the alligator might have attacked in self-defense after being stepped on or approached too close.
