A missing Air Force officer who fell out of an airplane above the Gulf of Mexico during a parachute training exercise this week is presumed dead, officials said Sunday.

Staff Sgt. Cole Condiff, 29, of Dallas plunged out of a C-130 aircraft as it soared at 1,500 feet on Tuesday, according to Air Force officials.

His parachute opened and crew in the plane saw him treading water after he landed — but, after days of searching, U.S. Coast Guard officials suspended efforts to find him Saturday.

In total, the Coast Guard’s air and boat crews searched more than 4,909 square-nautical miles but were unable to locate his body.

Condiff, a Special Tactics combat controller, served in the Air Force’s 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, 24th Special Operations Wing. His roles included static-line jumping, military free-fall jumping and combat scuba diving.
