As the first guilty verdict against Travis McMichael was read out for malice murder, a loud “Whoop!” echoed through the courtroom.

The sound came from Ahmaud Arbery’s father, Marcus Arbery, who could not contain himself after more than 10 days of trial during which attempts to criminalize his son ranged from Travis McMichael’s description of him being “trapped like a rat” to defense attorney Linda Hogue’s invoking the alleged condition of Arbery’s toenails.

It was a sentiment echoed outside the courthouse as the friends, family and other supporters of the 25-year-old aspiring electrician who had been gunned down while jogging spoke of a bittersweet victory.

After 11 hours of deliberation, the predominantly white jury came down with just four not-guilty verdicts out of 27 charges: malice murder for Greg McMichael and William Bryan, one count of felony murder for Bryan and one count of aggravated assault for Bryan.

“A jury of 11 whites and one Black, in the deep South, stood up in the courtroom and said that Black lives do matter,” the Rev. Al Sharpton said outside the courtroom after Walmsley read the verdicts.
