18 rules to be a “Good housewife” according to this 1955 magazine shows that we’ve come a LONG way
Sometimes it’s truly amazing to catalog just how insanely different things were not so long ago. There are definitely changes we could happily do without –airplane travel, I’m looking at you — however, thankfully sometimes times change for the better.
Take a gander at this May of 1955 issue of Housekeeping Monthly who published an article entitled, “The Good Wife’s Guide,” which details all the ways that a wife should act and how best she can be a partner to her husband and a mother to her children. Granted, and let me be clear, I am not saying that people in the ’50s were bad people at all. Far from it. Societally the prevailing mentality at the time was that the man provided and so the wife’s role was to be a stay at home mom.
The point I’m driving at is that times change, and when you read some of these eye-opening suggestions for how to behave, you will see just how starkly different things about 70 years ago…
