A mugger who killed an octogenarian Lehman College professor in an Upper West Side ATM vestibule was sentenced to 10 years behind bars after a face-to-face meeting with his victim’s family.
Matthew Lee, 52, sat in a “restorative justice circle” with the son and daughter-in law of Young Kun Kim, 87, to hash out the harm he’d caused the family and talk about his own life. And on Thursday, Kim’s son said in court he forgives Lee for his father’s death.
Lee’s contrition — and the DA’s recognition of it — may have spared him more than a decade in prison.
Lee was initially charged with murder. Because Kim — who studied political thought across different cultures — died during a robbery, Lee might have faced 25 years to life under New York’s felony murder statute.
But in August, Lee pleaded guilty to manslaughter and robbery as part of a “restorative justice” program started by Manhattan D.A. Cyrus Vance.
